History of Watches

The history of watches and timekeeping through the ages makes for a fascinating reading. For many centuries people have been trying to keep track of time.

The earliest known timepiece used by man was the sundial. Eventually civilization progressed to the hourglass. During the 14th Century, the first mechanical clock was created. It weighed about 2 tons, and had only one hand to measure the hour -- and was usually two hours slow!

Eventually, clocks became smaller and smaller and developed into what we now know as the watch. It was almost into the 1900s before watches were mass produced and available to everyone, not just the rich.

As watches became more accurate, they indicated hours and minutes with two separate hands, and finally a third hand showed the seconds as well.

Today, the modern watch is a small miracle of technology and craftsmanship whose components have been perfected over a long period of time. It is a thoroughly reliable timekeeper, which has proven itself over the years.

Along with technological advances have come advances in styling and design. In addition to being functional and stylish, the modern watch has also become a piece of jewelry that is worn with pride. They are worn every day, knocked about and sometimes dunked in water, and no other item we wear consistently performs as expected and still looks great.

Most people today usually own two or more watches. There are watches for sports, watches with calendars, calculators, tvs, and even tv/video remotes to meet almost anyone's need.

Having a basic understanding of how watches function will help you become an expert in your next watch purchase.
